Is this stupid, or what?
So California has decided to allow owners of certain hybrid cars to drive
solo in the carpool lanes:

Supposedly, this law is to give buyers incentives to buy clean air vehicles
like the Toyota Prius.
Having lived near San Francisco for 11 years, I think this is yet another
stupid idea put forward by the usually idiotic morons of the
California Legislature. In a rush hour, even the carpool lanes are clogged,
albeit not as much as the other lanes. In my opinion, all this does is give
the selfish incentive to add their congestion to the car pool lane. All it
says to me is "Hey, if you're too selfish to car pool or use mass transit,
you can use the car pool lane if you save a little gas by using a hybrid."
Hello? This is a band aid incentive (and not a very good one, I might add)
being slapped on what is a major problem in the U.S. as a whole. Our love
affair with cars blinds us to the whole problem - our mass transit systems
in the U.S. are woefully inadequate. The SF bay area probably has one of the
better mass-transit systems in the U.S., and yet it pretty much sucks.
Hey, I love my sports car as much as the next guy, but when it comes to
commuting, I'd rather ride an efficient mass transit system. You know, one
that can get me between home and work in as short a time as possible, for
less than the price of driving my car AND operates at the hours I need it to
operate. My several visits to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth
convinced me that American's don't know how to do mass-transit. And from
what I understand, the Australian's aren't as good at it as the Japanese or
the Europeans. But they beat us by a long shot, at least in all their major
cities.
Instead of pumping money to incentive programs like special permits for
hybrid drivers, why don't we put more money into efficient mass transit?
Not stupid, expensive systems like the light rail systems in Salt Lake City
and Denver, but efficient elevated or monorail systems like they have in
Japan?
Come on America! Why is it that Walt Disney World can operate an efficient
transit system for free, while most of our cities can't operate a half-assed
system that costs both the commuters and the tax-payers?
